Child Car Accident Injuries: When to See a Chiropractor

When a car accident happens, parents naturally focus on their children first. But children are not always able to articulate what hurts or how much — and some injuries do not produce obvious symptoms right away.

If your child was in a car accident in North Miami, here is what to watch for and when to bring them in for evaluation.

Are Children More or Less Vulnerable Than Adults?

Children's bodies are different from adults in ways that affect how they are injured in car accidents:

More flexible, but not invulnerable. Children's spines are more flexible than adults', which provides some protection against fractures. However, this flexibility also means their soft tissues — muscles, ligaments, and discs — can be stretched beyond their limits without the spine breaking.

Larger head-to-body ratio. Children's heads are proportionally larger and heavier than adults', making them more susceptible to whiplash-type injuries. The neck muscles are not strong enough to fully control the head's movement in a collision.

Difficulty communicating symptoms. Young children may not be able to describe pain accurately. They may become irritable, clingy, or withdrawn — behavioral changes that parents sometimes attribute to the emotional stress of the accident rather than physical injury.

Warning Signs of Injury in Children After a Car Accident

Watch for these signs in the days following a crash:

  • Neck pain or stiffness — reluctance to turn the head, holding the head to one side
  • Back pain — difficulty sitting still, reluctance to bend or twist
  • Headaches — increased irritability, sensitivity to light or noise
  • Changes in sleep — difficulty falling asleep, waking frequently
  • Changes in behavior — increased clinginess, regression in younger children, withdrawal in older children
  • Difficulty concentrating — possible sign of concussion
  • Limping or favoring one side — possible hip, knee, or lower extremity injury
  • Complaints of arm or leg numbness — possible nerve involvement

When to Go to the ER vs. a Chiropractor

Go to the ER immediately if your child:

  • Lost consciousness, even briefly
  • Is confused or disoriented
  • Has severe neck pain and refuses to move their head
  • Has visible deformity or severe swelling
  • Is vomiting repeatedly
  • Has difficulty breathing

See a chiropractor if your child:

  • Has neck or back pain without neurological symptoms
  • Has headaches that developed after the crash
  • Has muscle stiffness or reduced range of motion
  • Has behavioral changes suggesting pain or discomfort

Chiropractic Care for Children After Car Accidents

Chiropractic care for children uses gentle, age-appropriate techniques. Adjustments for children use much less force than adult adjustments — often no more pressure than you would use to test the ripeness of a tomato.

Children typically respond very quickly to chiropractic care. Their bodies are resilient, and with proper treatment, most children recover fully from car accident injuries.

Florida PIP insurance covers chiropractic care for children injured in car accidents, just as it does for adults.
